Altar Servers, Reading and Bidding Prayers
Altar Servers
Altar Servers assist the priest at the celebration of Mass and other services. Young people (P4+) are trained for this role by Dominic Ward (telephone 635095). If you’d like to take part, please contact Dominic. After serving faithfully for a year, our servers are enrolled in the Archconfraternity of St Stephen.
Reading and Bidding Prayers
Readers proclaim the Word of God in the readings at Mass (apart from the Gospel) and announce the intentions for the prayers of the faithful.
“When the sacred scriptures are read in Church, God Himself is speaking to His People, and Christ, present in His word, is proclaiming His Gospel.”
The readings at Mass are among the most important elements of Liturgy. The ministry of readers and its importance cannot be overstated. At present in St Francis Xavier’s, there are forty readers (also involved in the bidding prayers) and new Readers are very welcome -and needed - especially for certain Masses. If you’d like to become a Reader (there is an annual day of training for readers) please contact the Co-ordinator: George Herriott (636473). We’d especially like to have more young people become Readers!
